Actor Joseph Pilato has died at the age of seventy. Also known as Joe Pilato, he will probably be best remembered as the villainous Captain Rhodes who gets his comeuppance in George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985).
It was Romero that first brought the aspiring actor to the screen in 1878 with a small role in as a police dock officer in Dawn of the Dead. The same year, Pilato played a cinematographer in Dusty Nelson’s Effects, a take on the myth of snuff movies.
Outside of the horror genre, Pilato also had a role in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994).
Pilato’s friend Marty Schiff confirmed his passing on Facebook, writing: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that actor and old friend Joseph “Joe” Pilato passed away quietly in his sleep last night. Rest in Peace, Joe.”
